Prop 8 Campaigning

HERE'S WHAT MOST PROP 8 SUPPORTERS DID TO CAMPAIGN:

-Made phone calls
-Held signs at street corners
-Knocked on doors (As in knocked on doors, waited for someone to respond, and then left after talking to them. Not barging into houses & ripping up marriage licenses.)
-Blogging

PROP 8 OPPOSERS DID MANY OF THE ABOVE ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING CAMPAIGNING EFFORTS:

-Punching out elderly people or a man innocently standing on the sidewalk with Yes on Prop 8 signs
-Trespassing private property to steal signs
-Throwing rocks
-Created a hypocritical "No on 8" ad that singled out & attacked a church group, (coincidentally, my own), that supported the proposition in a hypocritical effort to ostracize & divide supporters of Prop 8
-Defaced & keyed cars that had Yes on 8 bumper stickers
-Bully, patronize, mock, & other such immature & foul behavior

WHAT IF PROP 8 DIDN'T PASS? HOW WOULD I FEEL?

-I would be disappointed; but I would move on.
-I would understand why others voted "no" even though I disagree.
-I would prepare myself for an increasing amount of people wrongly accusing me of being a homophobe, a hater, discriminatory, a bigot, and receiving all sorts of foul language & treatment.

SO HOW DID THE OPPOSERS OF PROP 8 REACT? HERE ARE SOME DIRECT QUOTES:

-"I've got a big list of names of mormons and catholics that were big supporters of Prop 8. … As far as mormons and catholics … I warn them to watch their backs."
-"I hope they all rot in hell, those servants of a lying, corrupt devil! BAN RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM"
-"I have never considered being a violent radical extremist for our equal rights. But now I think maybe I should consider becoming one."
-"Can someone in CA please go burn down the Mormon temples there, PLEASE. I mean seriously. DO IT."
-"I'm going to give them something to be f---ing scared of. … I'm a radical who is now on a mission to make them all pay for what they've done."

TOLERANCE: a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, RELIGION, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry

BIGOTRY: stubborn and complete intolerance of ANY creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own

I know that opposers would react to this by saying that we are the intolerant ones because we legislated our beliefs. If Prop 8 did not pass, the same could be said that the opposing side legislated THEIR beliefs. A majority of Prop 8 supporters are religious, however, the word "marriage" being defined as solely between a man and a woman is not only a Judeo-Christian ideal. It has been around with MANY cultures & religions since the beginning of time. To those who compare this with the Civil Rights movement, here is a FACT: a whopping 70% of African-Americans voted YES on Prop 8.

If you want to call me intolerant, you go right on ahead. Just make sure that you get your facts straight as to WHAT exactly it is of which I am intolerant.

Here is what I tolerate: people believing how they choose, loving, spending their lives with, and making personal commitments to whomever they choose.

Here is what I am intolerant of: being wrongfully accused of hatred, bigotry, and homophobia. Being threatened.

In all of my time writing my thoughts about Prop 8 I have been opinionated. I have defended & taught what I believed. I have also been NOTHING but understanding, respectful, patient and tolerant. I am now past walking on eggshells & padding my words because I don't want anyone to be offended. If you want to play hardball & throw me a fast one, I will still keep my dignity & grace. But when people have the NERVE to hypocritcally threaten burning buildings that are most sacred to myself and 13 million other people in the world, I'm ready to step up to the plate with a bat.

More of my own thoughts to follow . . .

AMEN! When I saw that protesters were surrounding the LA temple (which is where my family was sealed together) I got really afraid for my first amendment rights. They talk about marriage being a human right, but lets try NOT to destroy the rights we already have protected through our constitution and bill of rights. I don't understand where they get off telling me that my religious opinion doesn't count.

Granted, if the situation were reversed, you could probably find some crack pot somewhere saying things like they're saying about us against their community, but there most definitely would not be giant protests blocking streets and places of worship.

Sort of reminds me of Matthew 23:13-33 (the one about the hypocrites). Now I have that one Godspell song stuck in my head.

REGARDING CAMPAIGNING EFFORTS

Your “we’re so innocent” argument is ridiculous. You KNOW there was sign stealing on both sides, and just because our side didn’t whine to the media about physical confrontations doesn’t mean they didn’t happen. And when it comes to fighting, it takes TWO to tango, no matter who comes out with a bruise.

And by the way...gays and lesbians are beaten and MURDERED just for being who they are. Laramie ring a bell? Brandon Tina? The history leading up to the Stonewall riots? Hitler’s drive to extinguish gays? Do you know that I have to look over my shoulder to make sure my family is safe from physical threats every day? Guess some of your zealots got a taste of what millions of my family members have been through for decades.

Not fun is it?

Look, YOU are the ones who put the prop and on the ballot. If you can’t take the heat, keep your bigotry out of my government.

WHAT IF PROP 8 DIDN'T PASS? HOW WOULD I FEEL?

“I would be disappointed; but I would move on.”

Yeah, because your civil rights aren’t being taken away. If they were, would you move on?? Honestly.

“I would prepare myself for an increasing amount of people wrongly accusing me of being a homophobe, a hater, discriminatory, a bigot, and receiving all sorts of foul language & treatment.”

Mary, you already are all those whether you like it or not...as for foul language/treatment...it’s called walking a mile in MY shoes. Deal with it.

SO HOW DID THE OPPOSERS OF PROP 8 REACT?

Yes, let’s pick through ALL the reactions and pull out the ones that suit your argument best. Kind of like using bits and pieces of the bible to discriminate.

How about all the PEACEFUL protests. The intelligent rebuttals. The civilized way our team is going into the courts to repeal this ballot and restore our civil rights and human dignity.

Maybe I should pull some Yes on 8 quotes about how all of us faggots should go to hell. Or post some photos of those religious freaks saying that god hates fags. Want to play that game???? Really???

TOLERANCE vs. BIGOTRY

You tolerate noise. You tolerate a cold. You tolerate traffic. You tolerate noisy neighbors.

You don’t tolerate a large part of the population while denying them their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You don’t take away their civil rights. You accept them and let them pursue a happy and fulfilling life, whether or not it differs from your own. Tolerating a “lifestyle” (genetics) while aggressively and stubbornly pursuing ways to destroy their lives is BIGOTRY.

“Here is a FACT: a whopping 70% of African-Americans voted YES on Prop 8.”

Nice. Blame them. So, so typical.

“What I tolerate / what I am intolerant of”

There’s that cop-out of a word again. If you “tolerate” us, just leave us alone. But since it’s too late for you to have done that, accept whatever comes at you. You deserve your accolades, right??

“I have also been NOTHING but understanding, respectful, patient and tolerant.”

I call bullsh*t. All you’ve done is preach hate, disrespect, and bigotry. You threw the stone...if you live in a glass house, maybe you should think twice next time.

I could write this exact same post but for the opposite opinion. There are jerks on both sides of this discussion. There are Prop 8 supporters holding signs that read "God Hates Fags" and calling for the illegalization of homosexuality. Do I claim that you agree with them? No. Painting an entire group by the actions of a few is wrong.

Crickets? Nothing to say anymore? Or maybe you're off praying for more of those "rogue" judges who will hopefully overturn your discriminatory proposition and not allow your bigotry to remain a part of California's Constitution.

Where'd you go? Didn't want to suffer the abuse anymore? Cuz I am. I'm still me and still looking over my back. See what I mean that you can just walk away from this blog and go back to your little world?

So easy for you.
